How to Apply for a Driving License Online and Offline
Driving opens up a world of possibilities, whether you're cruising around town or exploring new places on a road trip. Getting your driver's license is the key to unlocking this freedom, and the good news is, it's easier than ever before!
Online or Offline? You Choose!
Gone are the days of endless lines and paperwork. You can now apply for your license online through the Sarathi website, or visit your local Regional Transport Office (RTO) in person. Here's a breakdown of both methods:
Zooming Through Online Application:
- Visit the Sarathi website. Think of it as your one-stop shop for all things driving license!
- Select state. Choose the state where you live and will be driving the car. Fear not, you can drive anywhere in India once you get the driving licence.
- Click the "Apply for Driving Licence" section. Psst. It's the second option.
- Fill out the application form. Be sure to double-check all your information for a smooth process.
- Pay the fees online. No need for fumbling with cash!
- Schedule your driving test. Pick a date and time that works for you.
- Pass the test, get your license! If you ace the test, your license will be mailed to you or available for download online.
Applying in Person at the RTO:
- Grab Form 4. You can download it from your state's transport department website or pick one up at the RTO.
- Fill out the form carefully. Make sure all the details are correct.
- Pay the application fee.
- Schedule your driving test. Choose a convenient date and time.
- Pass the test, receive your license! Depending on your state, you might get it right away or it might be mailed to you.
Who Can Apply?
Before you jump in the driver's seat, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Learner's Permit Power: You'll need a valid learner's permit to apply for a permanent license. This shows you've had some training and understand the basics.
- Age Matters: The minimum age for a private vehicle license is usually 18, but for commercial vehicles, it's typically 20.
- Traffic Smarts: Brush up on traffic laws and regulations. Knowing road signs and signals is key to safe driving.
- Time Limits: Don't wait too long! You usually have 30 days (or up to 180 days in some cases) after getting your learner's permit to apply for a permanent license.
Documents You'll Need:
- Proof of age: Birth certificate, PAN card, passport, etc.
- Proof of address: Aadhaar card, utility bill, etc.
- Passport-sized photos
- Learner's permit (for permanent license application)
- Application fee
- Medical certificate (for applicants above 40 in some cases)

- Issuance of Learner’s Licence (Form 3): Rs. 150 per Vehicle Class
- Renewal of Driving Licence: Rs. 200
- Competence to Drive Test or Retest: Rs. 300
- Issuance of Driving Licence: Rs. 200
- Learner’s Licence Test or Retest: Rs. 50
- Hazardous Goods Vehicle Authorization: Rs. 100
- Late Application (after grace period): Rs 300
- International Driving Permit: Rs 1000
- Addition of new vehicle class to driver’s licence: Rs 500
Important Update: Accredited Training Centers
As of July 1, 2022, you might be able to skip the RTO visit altogether! In some cases, accredited driver training centers can issue licenses to qualified applicants who complete their training program.
